Exercise therapy

At Physiolog, our exercise therapy program is specially designed for young fencers aged 18 to 25 recovering from ACL injuries. We focus on restoring knee function, optimizing lower limb biomechanics, and building the strength, agility, and neuromuscular control needed for safe and successful return to fencing.

Our team of experienced physiotherapists develops sport-specific, evidence-based exercise plans tailored to each athlete’s stage of recovery, surgical history, and individual goals. Our approach goes beyond basic rehabilitation by integrating fencing movements and performance metrics to support long-term knee health and competitive readiness.

Our Exercise Therapy Includes:

1. Individualized Functional Assessment
We begin with a thorough evaluation of your strength, stability, range of motion, movement mechanics, and fencing-specific demands to create a progressive rehabilitation plan.

2. Early- to Late-Stage Strength Training
From controlled activation in the early phases to advanced unilateral and plyometric exercises, we guide you through each recovery stage with a focus on restoring quadriceps and hamstring strength, correcting imbalances, and supporting dynamic knee stability.

3. Neuromuscular and Proprioceptive Training
We incorporate targeted drills to retrain balance, coordination, and reaction time, critical for fencing footwork, directional changes, and injury prevention.

4. Fencing-Specific Movement Re-Education
Our sessions include lunge mechanics, change-of-direction training, and deceleration techniques to ensure a smooth return to piste-ready condition.

5. Performance Readiness Testing
Before returning to competition, you’ll undergo objective testing to ensure your body is fully prepared for the demands of fencing.

6. Education for Long-Term Knee Health
We provide you with the knowledge and tools to maintain knee resilience, avoid re-injury, and optimize long-term athletic performance through targeted home programs and load management strategies.

MANUAL THERAPY

Our Manual Therapy service plays a vital role in the recovery process for young fencers aged 18–25 recovering from ACL injuries. Through skilled, hands-on techniques, we help reduce pain, restore joint and soft tissue mobility, and accelerate healing during all phases of rehabilitation, whether post-operative or conservative.

Manual therapy complements exercise-based rehab by addressing movement restrictions, muscle imbalances, and post-surgical stiffness that commonly follow ACL injuries. Our goal is to restore natural movement patterns and fencing-specific mobility, enabling a faster and more complete return to sport.

Our Manual Therapy Service Includes:

1. Fencing-Specific Assessment
We begin with a focused evaluation of your knee joint, surrounding musculature, and movement limitations, especially those affecting fencing stances, lunges, and directional changes.

2. Joint Mobilizations
We use precise, graded mobilizations to improve tibiofemoral and patellofemoral joint mobility, reduce stiffness after surgery, and support smoother lower limb mechanics.

3. Soft Tissue Release Techniques
Our therapists apply targeted myofascial release, trigger point therapy, and deep tissue massage to reduce quadriceps and hamstring tension, relieve compensatory muscle tightness, and enhance circulation around the surgical site.

4. Scar Tissue & Post-Surgical Adhesion Management
For post-ACL surgery clients, we use gentle, progressive techniques to break down adhesions, improve tissue glide, and support full knee extension and flexion.

5. Postural & Gait Correction
We address compensatory movement patterns and postural imbalances that may arise during the recovery process, helping prevent secondary issues like hip or lower back pain.

REHABILITATION

Our ACL-specific rehabilitation program is designed for young fencers aged 18–25 aiming to return to peak performance following an ACL injury or surgery. Our expert physiotherapists provide highly individualized care that addresses both the physical and sport-specific demands of fencing, restoring stability, strength, and speed while preventing re-injury.

We guide athletes through each stage of the recovery process with a progressive, structured approach that integrates strength training, movement re-education, and fencing-specific drills, ensuring a full and confident return to competition.

Our ACL Rehabilitation Service Includes:

1. Comprehensive Evaluation
We conduct an in-depth assessment of your knee function, fencing-specific biomechanics, and performance goals to develop a fully personalized rehabilitation roadmap.

2. Phase-Based Exercise Progression
From early mobility and activation to late-stage power and agility, your rehab plan includes progressive exercises designed to regain full strength, balance, and knee control relevant to fencing movements like lunges, retreats, and directional changes.

3. Functional & Sport-Specific Training
We incorporate drills that simulate the demands of fencing, including rapid deceleration, split stance stability, and change of direction in order to prepare your body for safe return to training and competition.

4. Pain & Swelling Management
Manual therapy, guided recovery strategies, and modalities like cryotherapy and compression are used to control inflammation and support healing, especially in early post-op stages.

5. Injury Prevention Education
We provide tools and guidance on proper warm-ups, load management, and recovery strategies to reduce the risk of re-injury and support long-term joint health.

6. Ongoing Monitoring & Progress Testing
We regularly assess your strength, movement quality, and readiness with objective benchmarks to ensure safe progression through all rehabilitation phases, including return-to-sport clearance.

Injury Prevention

We believe that the best way to manage injuries is to prevent them before they happen. Our Injury Prevention program is designed specifically for young fencers aged 18–25, helping them reduce the risk of ACL tears, overuse injuries, and muscular imbalances commonly seen in the sport.

Fencing demands explosive footwork, rapid direction changes, and high loads on the lower limbs, making structured injury prevention essential. Our evidence-based approach blends in-person coaching with accessible tools that fencers can integrate into their own training routines.

Our Injury Prevention Service Includes:

1. Risk Screening & Biomechanical Assessment
We start with an in-depth screening to identify physical risk factors such as poor landing mechanics, muscle imbalances, or joint instability, all common contributors to ACL and lower limb injuries in fencing.

2. On-Site Prevention Sessions
Our physiotherapists deliver personalized injury prevention programs at our clinic, focusing on dynamic stability, core strength, lower limb control, and fencing-specific movement quality.

3. Self-Guided Online Program
Can’t make it to the clinic? We offer a professionally developed online injury prevention program tailored for fencers, which can be performed independently at home or during training. It includes guided videos, progressions, and tracking tools to ensure consistency and effectiveness.

4. Warm-Up & Movement Prep Routines
We teach fencers how to implement proper neuromuscular warm-ups and movement prep drills before training or competition to activate key muscle groups and reduce injury risk.

5. Strength & Control Development
Targeted exercises to build resilience in the knees, hips, and ankles, improving proprioception, power control, and postural awareness under fencing-specific loads.

6. Education & Long-Term Support
We empower athletes with knowledge around load management, recovery, and early injury signs, ensuring they can take ownership of their health throughout their fencing careers.
